Mahopac Students Take One Giant Leap Before First Period

Students in Mahopac High School Academy science teacher Joseph Giorgio’s Astronomy class recently arrived at school one day around 7 a.m. for an early-morning observation of the moon and Jupiter, taking advantage of the later sunrise to put their classroom learning into practice.

Using a telescope, students practiced locating objects in the sky, working with the finder scope and adjusting the focus. They observed Jupiter’s visible moons and atmospheric cloud bands, then turned their attention to the moon, identifying craters, maria and other surface features they had previously studied in class. Students also used their phones to photograph the moon through the telescope, capturing images of their observations.

The morning soon became an opportunity for students to share what they were learning. As other students stopped by to see the telescope, members of the astronomy class took the lead, helping their peers locate features on the moon and explaining what they were observing.

“It’s exciting to see how much our students enjoy these opportunities to experience astronomy firsthand,” Giorgio said. “They were eager to come in early, use the telescope and explore what they had been learning in class. Even more rewarding was watching them share that excitement with other students and help their classmates learn about what they were seeing. That kind of enthusiasm is what makes these experiences so special.”

The early-morning session gave students a chance to strengthen their observation skills, apply scientific concepts and experience the night sky in a new way, all while inspiring others to take a closer look.
