The library is a busy place at Austin Road Elementary School, where students are learning that there is much more to a library than finding a good book. This year, the school welcomed new library media specialist [SS1] Lauren Simone, who, together with library aide Marilee Tompkins, has developed a library curriculum and schedule for students in every grade.
Austin Road’s library is divided into two rooms, with one space featuring books for students in kindergarten through second grade and the other offering collections for students in grades 3-5. Recently, students across the school learned about proper book care and the responsibilities that come with borrowing and using library materials.
During a recent visit to the library, DiNardi’s second grade class explored the different types of books available in the K-2 collection, including fiction, nonfiction, graphic novels, ready-to-read books, chapter books and new additions to the collection. Students also learned about the rotating book display that will change to highlight monthly or library events before settling in to hear Simone read “The Library Fish” by Alyssa Satin Capucilli.
For younger students, the library has another special addition this year: Ozzy, a mouse puppet who serves as the library’s “Mouse-cot.” Ozzy has quickly become a fun way to add some personality to students’ library experience and encourage their excitement about books and reading.
Simone also keeps teachers connected to what is happening in the library through a weekly newsletter highlighting what each class will be learning. The regular communication helps teachers reinforce those lessons in their classrooms and keeps families and staff connected to the library program.
“We are very fortunate to have Lauren leading our library program this year and building upon the strong foundation Rose [Sfikas] established for our school,” said Austin Road Principal Bryan Gilligan. “She and Marilee have created a wonderful environment for our students and are doing an incredible job making the library a place where children can develop a love of reading while building important literacy skills. Having a dedicated library media specialist is such a valuable resource for our students, and we’re excited about all that Lauren and Marilee are bringing to Austin Road.”
