Kindergartners at Austin Road Elementary School discovered the creative possibilities of texture through a hands-on art project led by art teacher Selina Bernat.
Inspired by the work of authors and illustrators Eric Carle and Lois Ehlert, students experimented with a variety of materials and techniques to create textured collages. Using crayon rubbings and painting with both brushes and forks, students explored how different tools and surfaces can add depth and detail to their artwork.
Through these techniques, students created colorful collages featuring birds perched on tree branches, each piece showcasing their creativity and growing artistic skills.
“Kindergarten is such a fun age to introduce texture because students are so excited to experiment,” Bernat said. “They loved trying out different materials and techniques, and it was wonderful to see how proud they were of their finished artwork.”
The project provided students with an engaging way to build foundational art skills while encouraging creativity and self-expression.
