Mahopac Students Learn Fire Safety During Fire Prevention Week

During Fire Prevention Week, Mahopac’s elementary and universal prekindergarten students met with local heroes from the Mahopac and Mahopac Falls volunteer fire departments to learn valuable lessons about fire safety and emergency preparedness.

At Fulmar Road Elementary, kindergartners visited the Mahopac Volunteer Fire Department, where Fire Commissioner Adam Savino and his fellow volunteer firefighters shared important safety tips. Students learned about smoke detectors, practiced how to “get low and go” if they hear a smoke or fire alarm and discussed the importance of having a family meeting place outside the home. They also talked about calling 911 in an emergency and asking neighbors for help if needed.

Several students volunteered to practice how to “stop, drop, and roll” in case of a fire. Firefighters then gave students a close-up look at the fire trucks and their tools, including an axe and bolt cutters, and showed what a firefighter looks like in full gear, breathing apparatus and all, so children would know there’s a friendly helper behind the mask.

The Mahopac Central School District is deeply grateful for the ongoing partnership and support of all our local fire departments. Each year, their time, care and hands-on demonstrations help our students stay safe and build trust with the first responders who protect our community every day.
