Austin Road Wonka Jr Performance

Austin Road Elementary School students shined bright on stage as they brought musical theater to life during the Song & Stage Summer camp led by music teacher Mia Kilker. Throughout the three-week camp, the students explored singing, dancing and acting in a collaborative setting that culminated in a mini-showcase performance of “Wonka Jr.”

From the first day, the students were eager and ready to work, quickly transforming into a confident and creative cast. They developed performance skills and built friendships while preparing for the final showcase, which was attended by family members.

“This was my first time teaching the Song & Stage Summer camp at Austin Road, and it was an incredible experience,” Kilker said. “My goal was to give students the opportunity to explore the world of musical theater through singing, dancing, acting and collaborative performance. My students far exceeded [my] expectations.”

Luna Buelta, who played Willy Wonka in the showcase, shared what the experience meant to her.

“I was so nervous at first, but when I started acting I got really into it,” Buelta said. “I love dancing, singing and of course eating the candy afterwards.”

For student Ileana Kayler, who played Grandma Joe, the performance brought a sense of accomplishment.

“It was really exciting because I love performing on stage,” Kayler said. “I love singing, dancing and acting. Also, seeing your family members watch you makes you feel a bit more confident and proud.”
