Mahopac High School has announced Lucy Hernandez as valedictorian and Kevin Behrendt as salutatorian for the Class of 2026, recognizing two students whose academic excellence and leadership have distinguished them throughout their high school careers.
Mahopac High School Principal Patrick Keevins praised both students for their well-rounded achievements and impact on the school community.
“Lucy and Kevin represent the very best of Mahopac High School,” Keevins said. “They have challenged themselves academically while also dedicating their time to extracurricular activities and service to others. Their work ethic, character and commitment to their community truly set them apart and we are incredibly proud of all they have accomplished.”
Hernandez, a first-generation college-bound student, said the recognition came as both a surprise and a moment of reflection.
“Honestly, I didn’t believe it would be me until I heard my name announced,” Hernandez said. “This recognition really allowed me to take a step back and look back on my efforts. I feel grateful for all the times I decided to challenge myself despite those doubts, because that courage allowed me to achieve what I once perceived as impossible.”
During her time at Mahopac, Hernandez immersed herself in a wide range of academic and extracurricular opportunities. She serves as co-president of Model United Nations and president of WolfPAC Writers, and is a member of the Gender Sexuality Alliance club. A dedicated student leader, she is also involved in five honor societies including National Honor Society, English National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta (mathematics), Rho Kappa (social studies) and Science National Honor Society. Hernandez has also spent several years tutoring her peers. Outside of school, she is a longtime Girl Scout, violinist and works with UPK-age students in an after-school program.
Hernandez will attend Carnegie Mellon University in the fall, where she plans to study civil engineering.
“My time here in the Mahopac School District was beyond my expectations and I’m going to miss all of the experiences with my friends the most,” Hernandez said. “Laughing together at lunch, debating in class and going on school trips are all memories that I hold dear to my heart, and I plan to keep in contact with them as we enter college.”
Behrendt, who earned the distinction of salutatorian, credited his success to consistent effort as well as the support of those around him.
“It feels good to see that all my hard work has paid off in this accomplishment,” Behrendt said. “In addition to my dedication, I would attribute my success to my parents, who encouraged me, and to my teachers for being patient and helping in whatever ways they could.”
Behrendt has been actively involved in both school and community organizations. He was inducted into the National Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta (mathematics honor society) his junior year. Having achieved the rank of Eagle Scout, Behrendt served as Senior Patrol Leader for his troop and has demonstrated leadership throughout his time with Scouting America. He is also an accomplished musician, performing as a bassist in multiple ensembles, including the Mahopac High School Chamber Orchestra and the Putnam Music Center Chamber Orchestra. In addition, he is a member of the Mahopac Falls Volunteer Fire Department and recently became an EMT, while also participating in Putnam County Youth Court occupying various positions such as judge, lead prosecution and lead defense.
Behrendt will attend Binghamton University in the fall, where he plans to study electrical engineering.
“I made some great friends in Mahopac whom I hope to stay in touch with for the future,” Behrendt said. “I will miss my friends and teachers the most, because I’ve enjoyed knowing and talking to all of them.”
As they prepare to graduate, both Hernandez and Behrendt leave a lasting impact on Mahopac High School, having demonstrated not only academic excellence, but also leadership, service and a strong sense of purpose.
