Mahopac Middle School celebrated its eighth grade class during a heartfelt moving-up ceremony on June 23, marking the transition from middle to high school for the Class of 2029.
Families, faculty and special guests gathered on the middle school field to honor the accomplishments of the students, many of whom first came together from different elementary schools three years ago. The celebration began with the Pledge of Allegiance led by student Nika Kalpaxis, followed by a performance of the national anthem by members of the eighth grade chorus.
Principal Tom Cozzocrea opened the ceremony with warm words for the students and the community which has supported them throughout their middle school years. He encouraged the students to remember the friendships, hard work and perseverance that have carried them this far, and to bring those same qualities to Mahopac High School.
“Today is not just a celebration of the end of middle school; it’s a recognition of all the growth, grit and greatness that each of you has shown,” Cozzocrea said. “Keep being curious, kind and courageous. The next chapter is waiting, and I know you are ready.”
Superintendent of Schools Christine Tona also addressed the class, reflecting on their growth since their last moving-up ceremony as fifth graders.
“You’ve opened lockers, opened books and opened your minds to new ideas,” she said. “In just a couple of months, you’ll walk through the doors of Mahopac High School as the Class of 2029. We are all so proud of you, and we can’t wait to see what you will do next.”
Certificates were presented to each student by Cozzocrea and Tona while assistant principals Regina Cucinotta and Anthony Muia read the names. Two students, Luca Giuliani and Skky Johnson, were honored with the 2025 Jenna Nolan Award, given annually to students who demonstrate resilience, kindness and outstanding character.
As students and families looked ahead to high school, the ceremony served as both a celebration of the past and a call to embrace the future with confidence.
