Students in Kaitlin O’Brien’s Ceramics class at Mahopac High School recently completed a creative and thought-provoking project focused on symbolism and metaphor through hand-built ceramic artwork.
As part of the unit, students designed and created original ceramic pieces that represented meaningful ideas, emotions or personal experiences. Throughout the process, students experimented with form, structure, space and surface design to intentionally communicate deeper meaning through their artwork while also strengthening their craftsmanship and creative thinking skills.
“One of the most rewarding parts of this project was seeing students connect personal experiences and abstract ideas to their artwork in such thoughtful and meaningful ways,” O’Brien said. “The students really challenged themselves creatively and demonstrated tremendous care and intention throughout the artistic process.”
One example of student work came from Ellen Caraher, who created a caterpillar with butterfly wings to symbolize personal growth and self-discovery.
“For my metaphor project, I wanted to showcase that you have to grow into yourself,” Caraher said. “The caterpillar is forcing itself to be a butterfly even though it isn’t ready yet. You have to learn to be yourself.”
The project also encouraged students to reflect on and explain their artistic choices during critiques and written reflections, helping them further develop their communication and analytical skills through the visual arts.
