Staff Spotlight: Kathy Racz

Mahopac Central School District is proud to shine a spotlight on Mahopac Middle School monitor Kathy Racz, whose kindness, humor and daily presence have made her a beloved figure among students.

A district employee since 2012, Racz may be best known for her tradition of “Chocolate Wednesdays,” when she hands out small, wrapped chocolates to the students who pass by her station in the hallway. What began as a one-time treat before the holidays has become a weekly ritual that students look forward to all year long.

“It started several years ago when I brought some chocolates in on a Wednesday before Christmas,” Racz recalled. “The following week, a student asked, ‘No chocolate today?’ and I’ve been bringing them in every Wednesday ever since.”

While the chocolate is a fun tradition, it’s Racz’s warmth and approachability that truly set her apart. Students often stop to chat, share stories or confide in her about challenges they are facing. She always listens and encourages them to seek out their parents or a trusted staff member if they need extra support.

Interim Superintendent of Schools Frank Miele witnessed her popularity firsthand during a recent PBIS assembly at the middle school.

“When Kathy was introduced at the pep rally, all the students clapped and cheered for her,” Miele said. “I thought, ‘Wow, this is someone the students love being around.’ The camaraderie between our staff and students here in Mahopac is really special.”

Racz, with her trademark sense of humor, gives part of the credit back to the chocolate. “The kids, I love them, they’re so funny,” she said. “If you feed them, they love you.”

But it’s clear that her impact goes far deeper than candy. As Miele noted, “Our students gravitate to her because she makes them feel comfortable.”

For the students of Mahopac Middle School, Kathy Racz is a reminder that small acts of kindness can make a big difference in building a caring school community.
